Feeling overwhelmed by the chaos in your home and unsure where to start? Here are a few quick tips for getting over the overwhelm:
1. Imagine that your home is a peaceful, joyful space. Think of a cluttered room, or go sit in it. Notice how you feel. 😩 Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and imagine that you have a magic wand that makes clutter disappear. Use your wand to "poof" away each item. Notice how you feel. 😇 Take a few more deep breaths before slowly opening your eyes. Knowing how good it will feel once you've transformed your home can provide solid motivation for making it happen!
2. Begin with the end in mind. Write down a list of all the rooms and storage spaces in your home. Next to the room, list two columns. In the first column, write the current function of that space. In the next column, write the *ideal* function of the space. Perhaps you've always dreamed of a reading nook, or a yoga and meditation room. Maybe you long to reclaim one of your kids' rooms now that they're out of the house, or you want to liberate the catch-all room so you can host more out-of-town guests. Getting clear on the end goal is vital!
3. Express gratitude for gifts and other sentimental items. This is slightly "woo-woo" but many clients have loved it! Let's say you have a gift from someone but that gift really isn't your style, or doesn't serve any purpose in your life. You may feel some guilt about parting ways with a gift from a loved one. This is common, and here's my suggested solution: as you prepare to place the gift in a donation bag, give it a big, sincere hug, sending gratitude to the gift giver for their generosity, thoughtfulness, and kindness. Then lovingly donate the item so someone else can enjoy it.
Bonus tip: This also works for well-loved items that are no longer serving you, but this time you thank the *item* itself before donating it.
